Make your own ontology
Some guidelines for constructing your own ontology.

Ontologies for ethology
Oooh- too cool! Some more ontologies with an ethology focus. I really hope this idea pans out!

Biological Ontologies
It would be great if there were already biological ontologies ready made for my modelling paradigm.

Intense body building
I don’t know if this body building site is really created by one guy or if it is more one of those slightly scammish commercial sites, but it seems to be for real and I think his writing style is pretty darn… cute, for lack of a better word.

Forbes Wildfoods
Just when I think I have this whole organic sustainable thing mapped out, I find a new category to investigate on the internet. This time it’s the ‘wild foods’ folks. Here’s a Canadian company. It’s good that they are at least advertising that they use sustainable harvesting practices. Wild harvesting is always a double edged sword in that regard.

Free Online Games
This is probably a dangerous site to know about :). I liked reaction time.

How do groups of Animals make decisions?
These folks have a model that tries to explain how.

Ethology
Ethology is the study of animal behaviour qua animal behaviour (as opposed to comparative psychology, which compares the behaviour of humans to the behaviour of other animals. You may have noticed that psychologists and other scientists have a hard time lumping humans in with the other animals. I guess Darwin’s legacy hasn’t spread as far as we might think.)

Evaporated Milk
The latest weird techno food I have discovered is Evaporated Milk. I realize that it isn’t new in the sense that pretty much everyone has heard of it, but do you actually know what it is or how you can consume it? I didn’t. It turns out it has a pretty interesting history. I started looking into it because we never drink enough milk around here to make it seem worth having a litre in the fridge just waiting to be thrown out. And yet, I love cream sauces. And cream soups. And people like milk in their tea. Something had to be done! Here’s lots of recipes.

Higher Level Hair Chemistry
That last hair chemistry link was pretty nitty gritty. But this one seems to be at just the right level. Lots of cuticle discussion, which is what I’m after.

Primitive Winter Camping Account
Okay, so just to be reassuring, this is not the type of winter camping I have in mind! Still, I respect this guy’s apparently honest account of his camping experience and the emotions he felt during the experience. He doesn’t try to make things sound pretty, that’s for sure.

Making Your Own Cosmetics
I was looking for shampoo recipes, when I found this unusual site, which is not what you might, at first glance, think. It isn’t a natural (in the sens of whole) ingredients supplier. Rather, it sells all of the bizarre cosmetics ingredients usually found in cosmetics, in bulk, so you can make your own cosmetics at home. Bismuth Oxychloride anyone? Actually, I think it’s kind of cool to be able to buy this weird stuff. Not surprisingly, I’m also a fan of those giant online chemical warehouses. Who wouldn’t want to snap up calcium carbonate in 50 kilogram jars! Just joking.

I was clued in to the No Sweat apparel line by a former student of mine. It’s always nice to know about stuff like this.

Kid’s Health- And Everyone’s Health!
I thought this was neat- Kid’s Health- a site about all aspects of health, designed for kids. While aimed at kids, I think it had some information that is relevant for us older folks, too. I especially like the discussion on self-esteem.

Freezing Ham and Scientists
I wanted to know if it was possible to freeze ham. Most websites, like this one, don’t really recommend freezing ham because it changes the texture and taste of the ham. However, I came across this amusing response on the Ask a Scientist website:

name Jed Lane
status student
age 10

Question - Why should you not freeze a ham?

There is no important reason not to freeze Ham that I know of.

Clearly, it all depends on what you think is important :).
