Generating Finite State Machines
I was inspired by Ken and Tony’s cell modelling environment to consider
how finite state machines might work with my modelling ideas. Here’s
someone who has written a program that
automatically generates
finite state machines.

Choosing Civility
I am interested in the concept of consideration, because I think it is one
of the easiest aspects of behaviour to have a hard time with. When people
are inconsiderate, it is not the case that they deliberately wish another
person ill. Rather, it is that they fail to realize that they are doing or
not doing something that, as a result, inconveniences another person. They
simply and honestly fail to think about that person. This aspect of
inconsiderate behaviour, that it is an error of omission, makes it very
challenging to avoid. Consequently, in my own journey towards becoming a
considerate person, I am considering buying
Choosing Civility: The Twenty-five Rules of Considerate Conduct. If I
do buy it, it will be my first foray into the world of e-books. Exciting!

Learning about dentistry
After six years of dental avoidance, I have gone to the dentist. The trip
was a success. My teeth and gums are fine, except for two small cavities
between two of my back molars. I feel that after six years, this is to be
expected.
With that said, I am embarking on my new campaign of personal dental education. No more avoidant behaviour for me. The two small cavities are what are know as ‘proximal caries’, which is to say that they are between the teeth, rather than on top of them. In this case, they are touching each other, almost like one cavity, shared between two molars. So I want to know what techniques are used to deal with proximal caries.
Here’s some information on techniques used
to fill proximal caries. A

Origin of Interest
I’m interested in how the financial system works. Not too surprising since
I’m firmly enmeshed in it. Here’s

LOTR wigs and other things
LHC recently had a discussion of wigs, which made me think they could be a
lot of fun. Looking to find a discussion of how to wear them, I came
across
The LOTR Costume Site,
which has information on wearing and altering wigs and all sorts of other
fun costume details.

Explaining the matrix
This guy
really goes out on a limb or two, but it’s a lot of fun. I was not at all
convinced, except… how do you explain the names of the people in the
underground station. Coincidence?

French Phrases
The time has come to get serious about learning french. But I intend to
drag a few of you along with me (you know who you are). I thought we could
start by watching some movies in French, and sharing some French phrases.
Here are a few to get us started.
And, if you

Bringing Science to Chicken Thawing
I love stuff like
this. It’s a meta-study that looked at studies done to determine
whether or not the poultry thawing recommendations made by Canadian
Agencies and the FDA has any basis in fact.
